Rivers PDP Reacts to Governor Fubara’s Possible Defection to APC
The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Rivers State has dismissed concerns over reports that Governor Siminalayi Fubara may defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC). State Chairman Robinson Ewor said on Tuesday that any decision the governor makes is a personal one. “As an individual, the governor has every legitimate right to pursue any political interest he deems fit, provided such action aligns with the overall interest of the Rivers people who elected him,” Ewor stated. During the six-month emergency rule in the state, which lasted from March 18 to September 18, one of the alleged items in a peace agreement reportedly signed by Fubara in June was that he should defect to the APC. Ewor, however, said he was not aware of any such plan, and that the governor had not communicated any intention to leave the party. The speculation gained traction after Governor Fubara was seen with Senator Hope Uzodimma, chairman of the APC Governors’ Forum and governor of Imo State, escorting him to President Bola Tinubu’s office on Monday. Adding to the concerns, Fubara’s statewide broadcast on Friday, September 18, his first after the end of the emergency rule, failed to acknowledge the role of the PDP in restoring democracy in Rivers State. During the emergency period, at least 11 PDP governors had challenged the APC-led federal government in court to reverse the declaration, while other prominent Nigerians condemned it as unconstitutional.
