The Vice President of Nigeria, Kashim Shettima has debunked claims that the nation’s federal structure is not flawed. Shettima said the nation only lacks collective fiscal responsibility to steer the country’s affairs. Speaking at the Leadership Newspapers annual conference on Tuesday, the vice president said Nigeria’s problem can be attributed to poor management of resources. He also said that the current constitutional architecture is not flawed. In addition, Shettima said Nigeria’s challenges are rooted in the deficit of our collective fiscal responsibility”. According to Shettima, the administration of President Bola Tinubu is confronting this challenge directly through reforms. Shettima, “We have chosen the path of reform. It is bold, often difficult, but necessary,” Shettima said. “To those who argue that Nigeria’s federalism is fundamentally flawed because of its fiscal nature, I urge caution. Federalism, as practised around the world, is not a one-size-fits-all system. There is no universal template.
